In the last 5 years Canada tremendous changes in their marriage laws. In 1999 the government of Ontario introduced legislation that would essentially give same-sex couples he same benefits and protections married couples have. This one piece of legislation started a snowball affect that reached through the whole country.

The Canadian law was that defined marriage was changed to include same-sex couples on July 10th, 2003. Made retroactive to January 1st, 2001. Canada's Parliament passed the law on June 28, 2005, and 3 weeks later the Canadian senate passed it. On July 20, 2005 it received its royal assent and became law of the land.
